The Salvation Army of the Cape Fear has broken ground on its Center of Hope at 1220 N. 30th St., Major Ken Morris announced Thursday.

“We are excited about the future of what this new and expanded shelter will offer to our at-risk and underserved communities," he said.

The Center of Hope “will provide much-needed shelter for families and individuals in crisis," he said. "Strategically located on 30th St., our shelter will offer seven family suites."

The 20,500-square-foot shelter will provide capacity to accommodate 75 residents, providing both family suites and housing for individual men and women seeking shelter. It will also provide a full-service kitchen and laundry services, a life-skills program designed to provide residents with skills and employment opportunities and expanded social services, which will include a food pantry, and rent and utility assistance.

“The facility is designed to offer flexibility to meet the short and long-term needs of our homeless community,” Morris said.

The facility has been in the works for a long time. Plans for a two-phase development were submitted to the city of Wilmington in September. The new shelter replaces the Salvation Army’s homeless shelter on North Second Street in downtown.
