Salt Lake leaders, including Utah Symphony CEO, sign support for reimagined downtown

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Over two dozen politicians and community leaders signed a letter of support for the Smith Entertainment Group’s “reimagining” of downtown Salt Lake City.

In the letter, leaders such as Gov. Spencer Cox, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, as well as several other community leaders, state representatives and senators gave their support.

The letter says the reimagining project is an “unparalleled opportunity” to leverage Salt Lake City’s reputation as a cultural gathering place.

“We are at a unique moment in time where leaders from across arts and culture, meetings and conventions, government, sports, entertainment, tourism and hospitality, and business are coming together with a shared commitment to reimagining downtown Salt Lake City and what it can mean for generations to come,” the letter reads in part.

Notably, among the list of signatures was President and CEO of the Utah Symphony Steve Brosvik. The Abravanel Hall, which serves as the home for the Utah Symphony, has been a focus of attention amid talks of a downtown reimagining.

The Smith Entertainment Group’s plan for a “sports, entertainment, culture and convention” includes the two blocks east of the Delta Center, which includes the Abravanel Hall. Thousands of Utahns rallied in support of preserving the nearly 50-year-old concert hall. Earlier this week, officials released a document detailing the potential renovations needed, signaling a $200 million price tag.

SEG said the exact impacts of its plans are still unknown and dependent on the finalized plans.
