TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said an outbreak of salmonella infections may be caused by potentially contaminated basil at Trader Joe’s.

The herb in question, organic basil sold by the “Infinite Herbs” brand, is sold in 29 states including in Florida.

The basil has been pulled from shelves but the CDC is advising Trader Joe’s shoppers to check for the contaminated herb and throw away or return any package they may have, as well as to wash items or surfaces that may have come in contact with the basil using hot soapy water.

Symptoms of salmonella include:

  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F

  • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving

  • Bloody diarrhea

  • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down

  • Signs of dehydration, such as:

    • Not peeing much

    • Dry mouth and throat

    • Feeling dizzy when standing up

Anyone suffering from these symptoms should call a healthcare provider, the CDC says.
