Salina changing elementary school day schedule

SALINA, Kan. (KSNW) – Salina Public Schools sent out an email to families on Wednesday, informing them that they are changing the school day schedule for elementary schools.

School will now begin at 8:15 a.m. and be dismissed at 3:30 p.m. The changes will go into effect on Monday, April 15.

“In order to meet the required 1,116 instructional minutes required by the state, we need to extend the elementary school day by 20 minutes,” the email reads.

KSN reached out to the school district Thursday afternoon. They sent back the following information:

“During our KSDE audit this week, we were notified that the way we are scheduling recess is an issue. The auditor indicated the expectation is that recess is not directly prior to or directly after lunch. Instead, they indicated it should be mid-morning or mid-afternoon,” said Salina Public Schools. “The adjustments allow us to count recess time as attendance hours.”

The new schedule will be in place for the remainder of this school year.

“We understand that changes to the school day impact families. We want to assure you that we’ve carefully considered all factors before making this decision. Our priority remains providing the best possible education for our students,” the email reads. “We appreciate your understanding and support as we work together to create an environment where every student can thrive.
