Saints sign former Chargers wideout: What it means

We thought Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead were enough for the New Orleans Saints. Then they signed tight end Coby Fleener, which was surely it. Then they drafted wide receiver Michael Thomas, so that’s it on offense, right?

Not so fast. The team decided they wanted more depth on offense by signing former San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Brown:

ESPN’s Mike Triplett also had this interesting note to share after the team made the signing official:

Brown hasn’t been able to stay healthy and hasn’t locked down a secure roster spot in a while. The Chargers released him in 2014. He would later sign with the Oakland Raiders, and with the Indianapolis Colts in 2015 before playing again with San Diego later on in the year.

He caught one pass for 22 yards and failed to secure a starting spot, and it’s impossible to think he’ll leapfrog Cooks, Snead and Thomas on the depth chart. However, Brown did show promise in 2013: Hauling in 41 catches for 472 yards and one touchdown.

Drew Brees’ list of turning receivers/tight ends into productive players goes on for miles: Joe Horn, Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston, Robert Meachem, Benjamin Watson, Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

Brown will be a challenge, and again, he probably won’t end up being too productive, given all of the talent they hold in the pass-catching area. But too many receivers is better than not enough, so it’ll be interesting to see if Brees can make Brown a good reclamation project.
