New Orleans Saints’ owner Tom Benson has been in a bitter war his will with his family, and this is surely one of the most tragic cases to think of in recent memory.

Per NOLA.com’s Katherine Sayre, a huge family fight broke out in 2014, prompting Benson to go against leaving the franchise (in his will) to his daughter and to grandchildren. As such, per Sayre, he has full plans to leave the team to his wife, Gayle Benson.

Here’s what Benson had to say, per Sayre:

“I think Renee and Rita and maybe Ryan was there too, came over to our suite and started saying things,” Benson said. “I’m trying to watch a football game. And they started picking on Gayle. And it got so bad, Renee shook her, and I said, ‘That’s enough, let’s go.’ Gayle and I left the game.”

Benson’s family fought back, trying to sue him and make him appear to be “incompetent.”

Overall, this is a very sad case for Benson and the Saints. Family members should not be broken apart because of will, but it’s hard to go against Benson’s reasoning for leaving the team to his wife.

It’s not uncommon to hear families break up over money and wills, and sadly Benson’s case is just another of many I’ve seen and/or experienced in my life, personally. Let’s hope that cases like this can help families realize that money is nothing compared to good feelings and love.

And let’s pray for the Benson family to have this matter resolved, one way or another.
