The New Orleans Saints had a chance to win their third in a row and make a race towards the NFC South division. They had a tough road game in Kansas City, but if most things went according to plan, this team could have been victors.

Trailing 24-14 with 8:37 left in the fourth quarter, the Saints seemed poised to cut the lead down. Mark Ingram fumbled at the Chiefs seven. The Saints then cut the lead to 24-21. The Chiefs were facing a third-and-nine situation with 2:26 left. Nick Fairley took a stupid penalty that gave the Chiefs a first down. Had the Saints got a stop, Brees just needs a field goal with two minutes left.

The Saints get the ball back, trailing 27-21. Willie Snead doesn’t get out of bounds on the first play. Michael Thomas then gets to the 50 for 19 yards. If he didn’t care so much for three extra yards, he could have set Brees up for a Hail Mary by running out of bounds. But he stayed in bounds.

All of this just shows what’s wrong with the Saints. Bill Belichick would release anyone who made a mistake like that. The Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks have played in two Super Bowls since 2013 because they know how to do common things like holding onto the football, not taking stupid penalties and running out of bounds when they have to.

But once again, it was coulda, shoulda, woulda with the Saints. Another chance to make a statement with a big road win against an NFC contender fell apart. They’re now 2-4 and virtually out of the NFC South race.

This is on Sean Payton. When do they move on?
