Saint Theresa boys basketball wins CYO Championship title

ERIE, Pa. (WHTM) – The trip from New Cumberland to Erie takes just under five hours. But for the Saint Theresa varsity boys basketball team it’s been a year in the making.

On Sunday afternoon, the Saints avenged a two-point loss in last year’s CYO state title game by defeating Erie’s Blessed Sacrament 48-41 in the championship game of the weekend-long tournament at Mercyhurst University.

Saint Theresa, Harrisburg Diocese champion, has had its sights set on the Bulldogs, Erie Diocese champion, since a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer went in and then swirled out. It was a heartbreaking loss and tears were shed.

But now the vanquished is victorious.

“That loss motivated us all year,” said Saints head coach Jason Grace, whose team finished 26-1. “We wanted to get back here. We wanted to play them. And we wanted to beat them.”

Mike Williams led the way for St. Theresa with 20 points. Nike Craig added 17 for the Saints, who finished the season 26-1.

Tears were again shed, this time of the joyous variety. This time, the Saints went marching in and the five-hour car ride home won’t seem so arduous.
