Are the sailboat license plates still being produced with raised letters? | Ask the RI DMV

Q: I’m not crazy about the new “ocean” license plate being digitally printed. I was thinking of switching to the “sailboat” plate. Are they still being produced with raised letters? I have not received the new plates yet, so was going to switch before my current old plates expire.

A: You can order the sailboat plate directly from our website (dmv.ri.gov) through our “Online Services” tab. The transaction name is: “Plate Remake/Plate Design Change.” (This is also where you would order a new/remake of a charity plate.) Please have your current registration certificate with you as you go through the steps of ordering this new plate design online. Remember, if you have a REAL ID, your full middle name needs to be included when entering your information.

You can also print out the “Application for Remake of License Plates” from the “Forms” tab and “Registration Forms” tab. Complete this application and mail it to the Cranston DMV branch or drop it off at any DMV branch. Make sure your payment method is included.

When your new plate has been made, the DMV will mail it to you with a new registration certificate and new registration stickers. Currently, this plate design is being embossed. The goal of the DMV is to move away from embossed plates to the digitally printed flat plates. They are better looking and more legible.

Our ocean plate Reissuance Program has been very successful over the last 15 months. More than 470,000 ocean plates have been distributed through our registration renewals and another 100,000 through stock plates being issued.

As a reminder to everyone, when you get your registration renewal form in the mail, make sure all the information on it is correct, especially the plate design. If the plate design printed on your renewal form is incorrect, email our Plate Office: DMV.PlateOffice@dmv.ri.gov.
