What are the safest new vehicles for 2024?

INDIANAPOLIS – The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released its list of Top Safety Picks for 2024 and midsized SUVs took home the most distinctions for crash prevention and protection.

The Top Safety Pick list is widely considered the industry standard for rating vehicles based on their ability to prevent a crash and to protect you if you’re in one.

Small cars on the list include the 2024 Acura Integra, Hyundai Elantra and Mazada 3.  Midsized SUVs include the 2024 Ford explorer, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade and more.  If you’re looking for a large SUVs, three 2024 Audis made the list. They include the Q7, Q8 and Q8 Sportback.

This year’s top safety picks included tougher requirements for protecting passengers in the rear seat behind the driver.  That testing involved simulating front-end crashes like a driver crossing the center line.  This year’s tests also put more emphasis on crash-prevention technology at night, including preventing crashes with pedestrians.

“It is important for auto makers to continue to improve these systems and put them in more models, as we are at a 40-year high in this country with regards to pedestrian fatalities,” said IIHS President David Harvey.

Overall, 49 models made the Top Safety Pick list.  Another 22 earned the rating of Top Safety Pick Plus.  Across the board, midsized SUVs made up most of the winners.  Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, which share ownership, had the most vehicles on the list.  Toyota and Lexus came in second, with Mazda placing third.
