Safe Cars Save Lives, a reminder to check your car for recalls

CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — Although your car may seem safe, it is always a good idea to check your car for important safety recalls.

Is there common law marriage in the Mountain State?

In 2022, there were 1,050 safety recalls that affected over 31 million cars and related equipment in the United States. However, it is easy to check for these safety recalls and figure out if your car is among those that do have them.

Vehicle Safety Recalls Week is from March 4, 2024 to March 10, 2024. The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are reminding residents of the state to understand the importance of checking for these recalls.

You can click here and enter your car’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to check for recalls and other issues present.

“Getting unsafe vehicles off the road is a key ingredient to safety and saving lives. A recall means that something about the product presents a danger to the safety or health of the consumers who have it,” said GHSP Director Jack McNeely.

Car recalls should be checked twice a year. It should be routine as if you were turning the clocks ahead or behind, or checking smoke detectors. Residents can also sign up here to get recall alerts. Another app from NHTSA called SaferCar app, can also provide updates and information about recalls. It can also provide local dealerships that can do repairs as well.

Currently, there are millions of recalled cars that are never repaired. This can put other drivers, passengers, and others at risk. If you think your car has a defect that is not covered by a recall, you can go online and visit nhtsa.gov or call the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
