‘Sad situation’: Frantic calls for help when two women, baby shot near Salisbury cemetery

SALISBURY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Salisbury Police are searching for the person who shot two women and a baby Wednesday night on South Main Street.

Police are not saying whether the victims were targeted but say there is no active threat to the community.

Sirens pierced the night on Main Street Wednesday night as a frantic neighbor called for help.

“I see them on the tracks, I see them on the tracks,” yelled a woman immediately following the shooting that occurred just before 10 p.m.

A neighbor says a baby girl was shot. Hank Newman exercises at the cemetery across the street from the incident.

“A baby, a poor baby shot, an innocent child, it’s just a sad situation,” said Newman.

The baby wasn’t the only one hit by a bullet. A neighbor says the child’s mother and another woman were struck as well.

“I can’t say it enough, I just can’t comprehend somebody going in there and shooting three people,” said Newman.

A neighbor says the victims had just come back from a funeral, but police have not confirmed that.

Investigators also won’t say if the shooting on South Main is connected to a man shot and killed at a funeral less than two weeks ago in Salisbury.

“I think it’s frustrating, it’s very frustrating the community’s impact, by this senseless violence and that we need the community members that saw it to step up and tell us,” said Major T.J. Crews with the Salisbury Police Department. “It’s highly frustrating.”

Police say the baby shot on Main Street and one of the women were rushed to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem in critical condition and the other woman has been released from the hospital.

Investigators are bringing in federal and state resources to help them find the shooter and to look into whether recent shootings in the city are gang-related.

A neighbor told Queen City News the baby and the mother underwent multiple surgeries.

“I just can’t fathom it, makes no sense,” said Newman.

Police say officers are getting overtime doing extra patrols walking and driving in high crime areas of the city, and they’re bringing in extra resources to track down the shooter.

“I hope they catch the person and don’t give them a slap on the wrist,” said Newman.

There was a separate shooting Wednesday night in Salisbury where a young girl was shot on Old Concord Road near South Shaver Street.

Police say there’s no evidence to connect the two shootings Wednesday night.
