Sacramento sued by Homeless Union for efforts to shut down Camp Resolution

(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Homeless Union filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the city of Sacramento for the city’s renewed efforts to shut down Camp Resolution.

Just over one year ago, Sacramento signed a land-use agreement with Camp Resolution to allow this group of self-governed homeless to live on a previously empty, city-owned, plot of land. The city is now trying to terminate that contract, but the attorney for Camp Resolution, Anthony Prince, says the city can’t do that.

Housing for the homeless: Are Sacramento city and county leaders doing enough?

On Wednesday, Prince marched with camp residents from the courthouse to city hall. He said Sacramento sent Camp Resolution residents a letter demanding they leave the property by May 16 because of a deal the city made two years ago with the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Board that expires on June 1st.

But during a press conference in front of Sacramento City Hall, Prince said the expiration of the zoning variance is not a legitimate ground for termination of the lease.

Additionally, Camp Resolution’s residents want individual, permanent, durable housing.

Camp Resolution resident Donald Cooper said, “They’re trying to back up…I was there, she was there, okay [they] want to back down from what they promised us…They haven’t given us a dime…We don’t need no money what we need is housing…”

Sacramento Homeless Union Attorney Anthony Prince said, “All these people fought tooth and nail and got the right to housing…If the city thinks that they’re going to lay down and let them breach this contract and come up, then they haven’t been paying attention…They haven’t been paying attention but you’re going to pay attention now.”

Homeless site not opening due to miscommunication between Sacramento governments

In response to the Homeless Union’s march and press conference on Wednesday, the city of Sacramento has issued the following response:

“Unfortunately, the Sacramento Homeless Union has not been open to the City’s repeated offers to collaborate and find solutions for the campers.

The City finds the Sacramento Homeless Union’s unwillingness to work together toward meaningful solutions to the issues at Camp Resolution both dispiriting and disappointing, and we will respond to their complaint once it has been received and reviewed.”
