Sacramento Republic FC sits atop USL power rankings ahead of season opener
(FOX40.COM) — Ahead of their upcoming season opener on Saturday, Sacramento Republic FC is getting recognition as one of the best teams in the USL.
According to the league’s preseason power rankings, Sacramento Republic FC is in the number one spot going into the 2024 season. The team bringing back a majority of its top players while also adding top League One goal scorer Trevor Amann are the primary reasons for Republic FC securing the top spot.

“On paper, it’s a formidable squad, one that should make noise throughout the season,” USL said on its website. “Sacramento kept the core of the team that finished top of the Western Conference a season ago and added the League One Player of the Year. On paper, they’re the favorites for the Players’ Shield that just eluded them last year.”

The Players’ Shield is awarded to the USL team with the best overall record at the end of the season.
Rounding out the top five of the power rankings are the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Louisville City FC, Charleston Battery, and the Indy Eleven. Notably absent from the top list of teams is last season’s champion, Phoenix Rising FC.
“It’s been an offseason full of changes for Phoenix Rising FC. They’re the defending title holders, but Saturday’s home opener against Birmingham Legion FC promises to be a test,” the USL said.
The bottom five list of teams include Detroit City FC, Las Vegas Lights FC, Monterey Bay FC, Loudoun United FC, and Miami FC, respectively.
Sacramento Republic FC’s opponent for the home opener on Saturday, Orange County SC, came in at No. 7 on the list, which means fans should expect a highly competitive match to kick off the season.
