Sacramento opening warming center as high winds expected in region

(FOX40.COM) — The city of Sacramento will open its warming center Wednesday, as much of the region is forecasted to have strong winds. 

Officials said the city will activate weather-respite operations at its Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC) on 3615 Auburn Boulevard. Weather respite operations will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday and continue through 11 a.m. on Friday.

The OEC can accommodate up to 50 guests and walk-ups and pets will be accepted, officials said. Guests will have storage available for personal belongings.

The weather respite center is open to all community members.

Those who are interested in seeking weather respite, officials said staff from the city’s Department of Community Response will be distributing free ride passes for the Sacramento Regional Transit.

“If you need assistance in accessing weather respite, please call 311 and make a self-referral to be connected to be an outreach worker,” a post on the city’s blog reads.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the entirety of the Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley. The wind advisory goes into effect at 5 p.m. Wednesday and is expected to last until 5 p.m. on Friday.

Damaging winds coming for the Sacramento region

The region is forecasted to have constant wind speeds of 20 to 40 mph and gusts up to 45 mph.

The area under the advisory extends west into Solano County, parts of the East Bay and Central Bay Area.

Forecasters said downed tree limbs and weakened trees are possible and people may experience difficult driving conditions.
