Sacramento International Airport seeks artists for garage, walkway projects

(FOX40.COM) — As the Sacramento International Airport plans to add a new parking garage and pedestrian walkway, there is also a need to fill those newly built and blank walls with art.

Sacramento County has issued a request for qualifications and experience for $3.75 million in public art projects at these two new airport structures.

Several locations outside and within the Terminal B Parking Garage and the Pedestrian Walkway have been highlighted by the county as desirable art project locations.

With an art budget of $1.75 million, the parking garage has art sites located along its east side, south facade and the south and west side entry points.

One of the highlight spots on the garage is the south facade which the county says, “presents an opportunity to create a work of art that can be seen from a distance for a sustained period by car and foot. It is a primary location for art.”

The pedestrian walkway has a combined budget of $2 million across three main areas; the south entrance, north entrance and walkway hub.

Covering 121,000 square feet, the pedestrian walkway offers a plethora of locations for art to be featured and seen by travelers entering and exiting the Terminal B Parking Garage.

Art projects for the two entrances have been allocated $500,000 each with the county visualizing the works as, “ways to craft grand gateways toward wherever each traveler needs to go, with work that embodies the thrill of adventure leading them on.”

At the walkway hub, the county has budgeted $1 million for an installation that will complement the great height and flood of natural light that will be in the vertical transition area.

Like the walkway entrances, 2-D or 3-D works are welcomed that will, “mark this space as a true focal point to the traveler’s experience between buildings.”

Statements of qualifications for the RQE can be sent at this link and must be submitted by 4 p.m. on May 7.
