Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies shoot man in south Sacramento on Fruitridge Road

A man shot by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies Tuesday night in south Sacramento is expected to survive his injuries, a sheriff’s spokesman said in an update Wednesday.

Deputies fired their service weapons about 8:35 p.m. at Odea Drive and Fruitridge Road. They began rendering medical aid for a man suffering from two gunshot wounds, according to live radio dispatches reviewed by The Sacramento Bee. Sgt. Amar Gandhi said the man was shot at least once by sheriff’s deputies in an update released Wednesday.

The archived audio from medics described the injured man as an 18-year-old shot three times.

Detectives in the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office’s gang suppression unit were patrolling the area when they saw a silver Ford Hatchback with an apparent vehicle code violation, according to a news release.

The driver pulled into a nearby strip mall and investigators attempted to stop the vehicle, deputies said.

A passenger in that vehicle began to run away while holding a gun, the news release said. Moments later, the man was struck by at least one bullet and was taken to a hospital.

It’s unclear what immediately led up to sheriff’s deputies shooting the man. Gandhi said the investigation is ongoing, and a video detailing what happened during the incident will be released.

Deputies said they found a Glock-style handgun and a loaded 30-round magazine next to him.

Deputies also closed roads around Fruitridge Road and Del Norte Boulevard, which is one block east of the Fruitridge Community and Aquatics Center, as well as Fruitridge Park. They have since been reopened.

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine if the deputy complied with department policy. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will determine if the shooter broke the law, which is standard practice.

The sheriff’s deputy, who has not been identified, was placed on administrative leave, the release said.
