Sacramento city officials designate part of South Land Park neighborhood as historic district

(FOX40.COM) — According to the city of Sacramento, city council members recently designated a part of the South Land Park neighborhood as a historic district.

The “South Land Park Hills Historic District,” constructed between 1955 and 1956, features nearly 50 residential buildings that have “maintained their historical significance and continue to thrive as a lively residential community,” the city said.

The homes within the new historic district were built by Joseph Eichler, a popular real estate developer who is remembered for his commitment to nondiscriminatory housing that set a precedent for equal access to modern, affordable homes in California.

“Eichler’s ranch homes in South Land Park Hills and other California communities filled the demand for quality, affordable housing for returning WWII veterans and their families,” the city said.

It continues, “Eichler is remembered for supporting fair housing practices during a time of segregation in the real estate industry.”

Standout features of Eichler’s South Land Park Hills houses include low-pitched roofs “strategically placed windows for privacy,” and plywood cladding.

According to the city of Sacramento, Eichler completed 60 homes in the South Land Park neighborhood, but only 49 are included in the designation.

What are historical districts?

The National Trust for Historical Preservation defines a local historic district as “an entire area or group of historic structures deemed significant to the city’s cultural fabric that are protected by public review.”

The nonprofit says the main purpose of creating a historic district is to prevent “unregulated and insensitive change” while also enforcing the preservation ordinance, which is a statute that establishes a design review board (also known as a preservation or historic district commission) and creates a design review process and guidelines.

Across the United States, there are over 2,300 local historic districts. The largest is in Savannah, Georgia, while the oldest is in Charleston, South Carolina.
