Sabres to open next NHL season in Prague, will play exhibition game in Germany

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Buffalo Sabres are going international for three games next season as part of the NHL Global Series.

The Sabres will face the New Jersey Devils twice in Prague, Czechia to begin the 2024-25 NHL regular season on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 at the O2 Arena. They will also finish their training camp in Munich, Germany and take on the Deutsche Eishockey Liga’s Red Bull Munich on Sept. 27 in an exhibition game.

This will mark the third time Buffalo has played games in Europe, first doing so in 2011 with a trip to Germany and Finland and again in 2019 with games in Sweden as part of the Global Series.

The matchup in Germany will be a homecoming for forward JJ Peterka, a native of Munich who played two youth seasons with Red Bull Munich. While the Sabres do not currently boast any NHL regulars from Czechia, 2022 first-round pick Jiri Kulich and 2019 sixth-rounder Lukas Rousek both hail from the country and will have good opportunities to make Buffalo’s roster next season.

The Sabres’ game against Red Bull Munich will also be the grand opening event of the German club’s new arena, SAP Garden.

Tickets for the two regular season games in Prague against the Devils will go on sale at 5 a.m. EST on Thursday, March 21, while tickets for the exhibition in Germany will go on sale May 7.

The Sabres continue their push to end their league-record playoff drought when they host the Red Wings at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
