U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, D-New York, presented a Senate Resolution calling for the release of Ryan Corbett, an American held hostage since 2022 by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The resolution introduced Monday calls for Corbett to be immediately released and condemns his detention. Corbett lives in New York and his parents live in Louisville. McConnell, who met Corbett's wife, children and parents, said the Biden Administration should do more to bring him home.

"Our resolution reaffirms America’s commitment to freeing Ryan and raises the international stakes of the Taliban’s wrongful imprisonment of American citizens,” McConnell said. "It’s time to put the Taliban’s violent rule on notice and show our enemies that the United States will not let American citizens be used as bargaining chips.”

A similar bipartisan resolution was introduced in January by Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-NY, and by February already had 67 cosponsors including Kentucky Congressmen Morgan McGarvey and Brett Guthrie.

"I personally called Drue (Corbett's father) and said, 'I can't imagine what you're going through as a father and as a dad myself, we're going to do everything we can to bring your son home'," McGarvey said in February.

Ryan Corbett spent years in Afghanistan helping small businesses. After the American military withdrawal in 2021, he returned to the country to check on his business and employees and he was detained in 2022.
