RV sales rise across Canada as price of units falls, says industry group

OTTAWA - A Canadian RV industry group says 2012 saw a jump in recreational vehicle sales across the country, with younger people increasingly among the buyers.

The number of units sold was up 13 per cent nationally in the first six months of the year compared with the same period in 2011, said Go RVing Canada. Alberta saw the largest increase at 42 per cent.

The main reason for the climb is the fact that RV prices are at historic lows, said spokesperson Emily Reid. The most popular RVs sold this year were towable units starting at $6,000.

"It's young families that are the No. 1 market," said Reid. "They're the ones buying the towables, because it's such an inexpensive travel experience."

About 67 per cent of RV owners are under age 55, said Reid.
