Ruth Bader Ginsburg released from hospital

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was released from a Maryland hospital Wednesday after an overnight stay for treatment of a gallstone, the Supreme Court said.

"She is doing well and glad to be home," the court said in a brief statement Wednesday night.

Ginsburg, 87, is expected to return to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in the coming weeks for further nonsurgical treatments to resolve the gallstone.

Ginsburg took part by telephone from the hospital Wednesday in the unprecedented telephone conference call arguments the Supreme Court launched this week to keep cases moving amid the coronavirus pandemic. Her voice sounded shaky at times on the call Wednesday, but she delivered cogent questions to lawyers for both sides.

The court revealed Ginsburg's latest health scare Tuesday, one day after she initially sought medical attention for the gallbladder issue. She has had several bouts with cancer, including malignant nodules removed from her lungs in 2018 and a tumor on her pancreas that required surgery last summer.

The latest statement from the court did not specify what treatment Ginsburg is receiving, but one common, nonsurgical treatment for gallstones is lithotripsy — a method of using shock waves to attempt to break up gallstones so they will pass out of the body.

The court's next set of oral arguments — also set to take place by phone — are scheduled for Monday.
