Ukraine will be able to join NATO only after victory in the war against Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel on April 30.

“In my personal opinion, we will join NATO only when we win," President said.

“I do not believe that we will be accepted into NATO during the war. For some NATO members, this is a risk, for others, it is just another reason for skepticism."

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy stated that once Ukraine joins NATO, "there will be no questions about compatibility with the Alliance or the professionalism of the Ukrainian military."

“The question of NATO — is a question of the majority“ — said Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

"And the majority is a political issue. In order for Ukraine to be politically accepted into Alliance, we need a victory first of all."

NATO summit in Washington

75th anniversary summit of NATO leaders will take place on July 9-11, in Washington, DC. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in January that he hoped for two decisions at the summit: transfer of new air defense systems and new steps toward Ukraine's membership in Alliance.

On July 11-12, 2023, a NATO summit was held in Vilnius, attended by leaders of 31 Alliance countries, delegations of Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Ukraine and Sweden.

Ukraine would become a member of Alliance without a MAP and would receive an invitation when allies agree and “conditions will be met”, said NATO Secretary, Jens Stoltenberg, on July 11.
