The Russians damaged buildings at the Semen Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics during an attack on Kharkiv on 14 May.

Details: Gwara Media noted that the buildings of the educational institution were struck by a UMPB D-30 unified multi-purpose glide bomb.

University rooms and stained glass windows in one of the university buildings were damaged.

Quote from Olena Kot, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of International Economics and Management: "The explosions started, and there were about three of them. Glass and debris flew at me. It was a very powerful explosion and everything was blown away."

Details: Gwara Media stressed, citing the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, that as of 25 April 2024, Russia has damaged 31 higher education institutions (107 in total in Ukraine) and 36 colleges (137 across the country) in Kharkiv Oblast.

This means about a third of all damaged universities are located in Kharkiv Oblast. In total, 69 educational institutions in the oblast have been destroyed and 705 damaged.

The Vasyl Karazin National University of Kharkiv has suffered the most among the city's higher education institutions: five facilities at this university have been almost completely destroyed, and another 28 have suffered varying degrees of damage, such as two student accommodation centres, three academic buildings, and a sports complex. Many university buildings have damaged roofs, facades, broken windows and doors, and internal communications. In addition, a lot of unique equipment has been destroyed.

According to early estimates, more than 4 billion hryvnias (about US$100.3 million) are needed to restore Karazin University's damaged and destroyed academic buildings, student accommodation centres and material and technical facilities.

Background: On the afternoon of 14 May, Russian occupation forces hit residential buildings in the central part of Kharkiv; at least 18 people were reported to be injured, including three children.
