A Russian National Guard officer will be tried in absentia in Kyiv Oblast for his role in the Hostomel occupation, where he and his team detained approximately 100 individuals, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced on Telegram on April 5.

The suspect is a deputy commander of the Russian Ratibor Mobile Special Duties Detachment (OMON), the investigation reveals. Alongside his subordinates, he unlawfully detained both civilians and prisoners of war in malfunctioning refrigerated chambers on the aerodrome premisesю

In these chambers, measuring six square meters each, they kept up to 15 individuals, most of whom were blindfolded and deprived of adequate medical assistance and sustenance. Detainees had to sleep on the cold floor, devoid of light, ventilation, or sanitary facilities.

The detainees were beaten and subjected to electric shock. The captors restricted their access to air and staged mock firing squads to extract intelligence about Ukraine's military and political leadership, the Armed Forces, and participants in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO).

The indictment against the Russian soldier has been forwarded to court. He could face up to 12 years in prison in Ukraine for his inhumane treatment of prisoners of war or civilians.

The German prosecutor's office on Dec. 27 has identified Russian soldiers who murdered civilians in Hostomel, Kyiv Oblast, in 2022.
