Russian dictator Vladimir Putin appointed General and State Duma MP Andrey Gurulyov, known for his erratic television appearances, to the "scientific council" of the Russian Security Council, according to a decree dated April 11, 2024.

The decree, numbered 255, raises questions about Gurulyov's qualifications for this role, as his scientific credentials remain unspecified.

Let's take a closer look at Gurulyov's past statements, which can shed light on the questionable judgment of this "intellectual giant."

Among his most contentious claims is the suggestion that Russia should eliminate about 30 million of its citizens who do not fully support Putin’s regime. "In our society, where the president enjoys an 80% trust rating — a testament to our current cohesion," Gurulyov remarked during a broadcast of a propaganda program, "the rot that remains should either be isolated or destroyed."

Gurulyov pushed for extrajudicial executions, proposed establishing a "propaganda ministry" akin to Nazi Germany, called for reviving the GULAG system in Russia, and proposed extreme measures like mandatory childbirth under Putin's orders, conscripting the unemployed for military service, and launching nuclear strikes against Ukraine and other Western nations.
