Russian drone bases spotted near Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant - Video
Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) has revealed the establishment of Russian kamikaze drone launch sites near the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant's (ZNPP) sixth reactor, according to a Telegram post on May 2.
Accompanying the announcement, HUR shared a video captured from a Russian first-person view (FPV) drone, which was allegedly intercepted by electronic warfare means. The footage shows the drone flying over Europe’s largest nuclear facility toward the cities of Nikopol and Marhanets, with the ZNPP buildings reportedly visible.
The video, labeled UT4D.TT, indicates that the drone was provided by the Russian Defense Ministry. Furthermore, HUR disclosed that drone pilot training has been conducted by the Archangel School, a program funded by the Russian General Staff, at the ZNPP site since summer 2023.
"These revelations underscore the reckless and criminal actions of Russia at the occupied nuclear site, posing severe risks of catastrophic consequences," HUR stated in the post.
Last month, on April 7, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that a drone had exploded on the grounds of the ZNPP. According to the director general Rafael Grossi, the agency recorded at least three direct hits on the ZNPP reactor’s main shield.
Later in its report, the IAEA said that explosions and the sound of gunfire were heard on the ZNPP territory when Russian troops opened fire on an object that looked like a drone. In one of the plant’s six reactor buildings, experts found damage to communications and surveillance equipment. Outside the laboratory, the agency saw bloodstains next to a damaged military vehicle, “indicating at least one casualty.”
Ukraine has denied any involvement in provocative actions or strikes on the ZNPP and has called for the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from the area.
On April 9, Ukrainian military intelligence reported that the security situation at the ZNPP was deteriorating due to the actions of Russian forces, but that no radiation leaks had been detected as a result of the drone explosion.
