Russian attacks devastate 800+ power facilities — Ukrainian PM
Over 800 heat generation facilities in Ukraine have been destroyed or damaged due to systematic Russian attacks, stated Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on Telegram on May 8.
Up to 8 gigawatts of power generation have been lost in the country.
"A staggering sum of approximately $1 billion is required to restore what has been lost," he wrote.
"Early on May 8, Russia targeted Ukraine’s power grid with 55 ballistic and cruise missiles and 21 kamikaze drones. While the Ukrainian military reported downing 39 of the incoming missiles, power generation and transmission facilities in Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhya, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia oblasts were hit."
Ukrenergo, the national power grid operator, later announced it would limit power supply to industry and businesses during peak load hours — from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. If peak-hour consumption rises further, household consumers could also experience emergency blackouts.
Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure
In the spring of 2024, Russia launched renewed attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities, conducting its largest and most powerful strikes of the war.

According to initial assessments, the recent Russian assaults on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure resulted in losses totaling at least 90-100 million euros. This figure solely encompasses the high-voltage equipment of the company, stated Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, head of Ukrenergo, on March 24.
"In light of Russia's extensive attacks on the Ukrainian energy network, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko stated the need to ready for all potential scenarios in the upcoming spring and summer months, during a statement made on April 12.
Germany will provide equipment from closed energy facilities to Ukraine, Halushchenko said on April 21.
