Russia won't stop if it wins the war in Ukraine, the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Jane Hartley, told Sky News.

"I was ambassador [to France and Monaco] in 2014, and I saw what happened in Crimea. I don't know why anybody would say, 'Oh, this is it for Russia',” she said.

"Democracy, I think, is at stake. So, we need to support Ukraine," the diplomat added.

Hartley is "optimistic" that the US will release more funding for Ukraine, adding that "anybody who thinks that Russia may stop after this – I think is wrong".

"We want to do everything we can to make sure Ukraine is still a strong democracy and that Russia loses this war," she said.

Russian cannot and should not win the war against Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said during a speech on March 15.

For peace to come to Ukraine, the West "must not be weak" and should "boldly state that we are ready to use means to achieve our goal - so that Russia does not win."

He added that "all options are possible," including French troops on the ground in Ukraine.
