Russia sentences four Ukrainian soldiers to life imprisonment for alleged civilian attacks

The court of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) sentenced four soldiers from Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya battalion to life imprisonment for allegedly attempting to murder civilians in Mariupol in 2022, according to the Russian Telegram channel Astra on May 24.

The Russians have accused Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters Vladyslav Kulyk, Oleh Komachevskyi, Dmytro Dobrovolskyi, and Oleksandr Romashyn of allegedly shooting three peaceful residents of Mariupol while stationed near the Mariupol Metallurgical Plant. One man died from the gunfire, while two others survived, according to the Russians.

The so-called court sentenced the Ukrainian soldiers to life imprisonment in a high-security correctional facility, the report said. These soldiers had already been sentenced for allegedly killing a civilian.

In a previous case, Russian authorities sentenced Ukrainian serviceman Mykola Oleksenko in December 2023 to 24 years in a maximum-security penal colony. The Russians claimed Oleksenko allegedly killed two people in Mariupol and attempted to murder another.
