Russia is reinforcing its positions near Mariinka and Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast, to exert further pressure on Ukrainian forces in these areas, Mariupol mayoral adviser Petro Andriushchenko told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on April 23.

According to him, there are confirmed movements of heavy equipment on the area, particularly tracked vehicles, which the Russians are transporting by trailers.

“This means they are pulling this [equipment] from Crimea, from near Melitopol to reinforce Mariinka and to reinforce Chasiv Yar, to apply further pressure on us," said Andriushchenko.

He added that Russian equipment movement is also continuing towards Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

“At the same time, we can assert that even with the increased movements to the north, they do not even closely match what we saw at the beginning of Russia’s Avdiivka offensive,” Andriushchenko continued, suggesting that this buildup of military force does not necessarily mean that Mariinka and Chasiv Yar would soon fall.

“It's much less, but we do acknowledge the fact and understand what it leads to.”
