Russia will continue waging ‘hybrid warfare’ against the West — Finland’s military chief
While Russia in unlikely to attack NATO countries with direct military action, it will continue “hybrid attacks” like GPS jamming and election interference, Finland's new armed forces chief Gen. Janne Jaakkola told Reuters on May 2.
His remarks follow several Western leaders expressing concern that Moscow might plan to eventually attack NATO.
“Of course testing the Article 5 is always possible, but if we take correct action and maintain unity, I consider an attack unlikely,” said Jaakkola.
He added that Russia is "too busy" preparing for a new summer offensive in Ukraine to consider an attack on NATO in the near future.
“The point for the Russians is that they wish to cause as much division in Europe as possible, so that our unity and cohesion is a bit weaker,” the general said.

In December 2023, German newspaper Bild reported, citing intelligence sources from an unspecified European country, that Russia might try to attack Europe by the end of 2024 or early 2025, when the United States could be in the middle of post-election political turmoil.
NATO's Military Committee Chair, Adm. Rob Bauer, has stated that Western countries should prepare for "total war" with Russia.
In January 2024, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Europe is "once again facing a military threat that hasn't been seen in 30 years," warning of a possible Russian attack within five to eight years.
