Russell County Hospital relocates, improves access to cancer center

RUSSELL COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) – Ballad Health celebrated the renovation of its cancer care department at Russell County Hospital Friday.

Hospital administrators cut the ribbon on the cancer care center after it was relocated and received improvements.

According to Ballad Health, the relocation and renovation of the center will improve access and comfort for oncology patients and visitors.

Chief Nursing Officer and Administrator Greta Morrison said the cancer care center was moved from another location in the hospital to allow for patient convenience and to create a more welcoming environment.

“It was located within the hospital previously, but we’ve moved it to better access,” Morrison said. “We still provide the same quality of care and the same services. We just moved the location to have access, direct access to the facility and not have to walk through the whole facility.”

Morrison told News Channel 11 the renovation was lengthy but worth it.

“We did a total refresh of the space,” she said. “It was a previous space of our surgery services, but we’ve converted it. We’ve renovated the walls, new flooring, painting, lighting and just kind of taken out some space and made it a little bigger. So it’s just been a lot of reconstruction.”

The center will still offer all the same services, including hematology and oncology treatment. The new entrance prevents patients from having to walk through other facilities and tire themselves out.

“The best part about having this access is that patients’ families can just drive them straight up to the door,” Morrison said. “Within about ten steps, they can be in the facility and then they’re in their clinic setting so they don’t have to make the long travels, walks, walk on, inclines.”
