RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) — Russell County High School was honored Wednesday morning by the American College Application Campaign as the 2023 School of Excellence recipient.

The America College Application Campaign selects 27 schools to be awarded for their commitment to student success each year. The campaign focuses on increasing the number of first-generation college students and students from low-income families pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential.

Russell County Administration spoke to WRBL about the impact of this award.

It’s a new era for Russell County. It’s a very proud moment. And it’s also a testament to our vision to inspire, empower and to educate with excellence. It’s also a testament to our mission  to provide a quality education so that our students will be prepared for college, career and life. So I am very proud.”

Brenda Coley, Superintendent of Russell County School District

“It means the world to me because it means that we’re giving our kids all of their options, they’re not being limited. Whether our kids choose to go to college or if they’ve taken the college and career ready pathway, we know that we’re sending 100% of our graduates out into the world prepared.”

Tonya Keene, Principal of Russell County High School
