Russell Co. BOE approves closure of 2 schools

RUSSELL COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) – Two elementary schools in Russell County won’t open their doors to students next school year.

Russell County Public Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Kim Hooker confirmed on Wednesday that Copper Creek Elementary and Swords Creek Elementary will be closed next year.

The Russell County Board of Education met Tuesday and approved the closure of both schools.

The school board voted 5-2 in favor of closing Copper Creek, with board members Bob Gibson and Kip Parsons voting against it. The board voted 6-1 in favor of closing Swords Creek, with Christy Perkins being the sole vote against the action.

Storm damages Russellville Intermediate School

Copper Creek’s closure will leave Lebanon Primary School as the sole primary school in the district.

Sword Creek’s closure will lower the total number of elementary schools in Russell County to four.
