The Rush: Kaepernick Named Face of Nike, Internet Self-Destructs

Nike announced that Colin Kaepernick would be the face of their Just Do It 30th anniversary ad campaign. The public’s reaction highlighted the divisiveness that pervades not just politics but every part of American culture. Fellow players and celebrities took to social media to express their support for the decision. Meanwhile, scores of fans posted videos of them cutting, burning and generally destroying their Nike gear in protest (rather than donating them to worthwhile charities). Nike estimates the announcement will generate some $43 million worth of buzz while the burning shoes will create some 43 million tons of carbon emissions.

Padres outfielder Wil Myers is in hot water. The slugger was playing ‘Fortnite’ with some of his friends when he insulted his manager, Andy Green. The only problem is that the game was being live streamed. The oft-injured San Diego outfielder was caught complaining about being forced to go through defensive drills this late in the season. The video was almost immediately deleted but because the internet never forgets, it was too late. Myers tried to smooth things over by apologizing to his manager. Still no word on whether he participated in the much maligned defensive drills.
