Run Internacional – US Mexico 10K kicks off Saturday

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The El Paso Community Foundation will be hosting the 6th edition of the Run Internacional – The U.S. Mexico 10K Saturday morning, March 2, the Community Foundation announced in a press release.

The run draws runners from all over North America on a course that winds through the shared downtowns of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez and historical landmarks, according to the Community Foundation.

The race begins at 8 a.m., departing from 333 N. Oregon, next to San Jacinto Plaza.

The Community Foundation says that this year’s sold-out event expects 2,000 runners to participate.

“Participants will run by Southwest University Park (home of the El Paso Chihuahuas baseball team and Locomotives soccer team), the historical San Jacinto Plaza, pass by many of the city’s beloved murals, the Consulate General of Mexico then runs through Segundo Barrio and crosses over the international boundary line on Stanton Street bridge into Ciudad Juárez,” read the press release.

In Juárez, the route passes through the following points:

  • Juárez’s city hall

  • The Bullring-Plaza de Toros Alberto Baldera

  • The Old Customs House, where the first U.S.-Mexico presidential meeting took place between William H. Taft and Porfirio Díaz in 1909 (it now houses MUREF, the Mexican Revolution Museum)

  • The Misión de Guadalupe (where Ciudad Juárez was founded in 1659)

  • The Juárez Cathedral

  • The world-famous Kentucky Club

“More than a race, this is a magnificent opportunity to showcase the beauty of our border region of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, and demonstrate the unity amongst our people,” said Mario Porras, director of Binational Affairs, El Paso Community Foundation. “This is a celebration of our tri-state community, our people and our culture, but more importantly is a time to RUN AS ONE.”

Additionally, the post-celebration event will take place for an Award Ceremony at 10 a.m. at Oregon Street (near San Jacinto Plaza). Prizes will be provided to the top three overall finishers and surprise prizes for random finishers.
