BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Central Valley natives Rudy Salas (D) and David Valadao (R) will advance to the November general election in the race for California’s 22nd Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

The pairing offers a rematch of the contest in 2022. Valadao was victorious over Salas by a little more than 3,100 votes.

What you need to know for the March 19 special election in the 20th Congressional District

The district includes portions of Kern, Kings and Tulare counties. Voter registration numbers for the district favor Democrats over Republicans, but Valadao has represented the area for five terms. He regained the seat in 2020 after losing it to TJ Cox in 2018.

The 22nd Congressional District race is expected to be one of the most competitive races in the country that may ultimately decide which party controls the House of Representatives.
