Student death at Thacher School under investigation

A fatality on The Thacher School campus outside Ojai Monday night is under investigation as a possible overdose, authorities said.

The incident was reported to dispatchers shortly before 10:15 p.m., said Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. James Sullivan. School officials had reported a student was in medical distress.

Sheriff's deputies and paramedics responded to the private school campus at 5025 Thacher Road, Sullivan said. The student was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death as a possible overdose, Sullivan said.

The male student, 18, was a Las Vegas resident, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office. The cause and manner of death were pending as of Wednesday afternoon.

Thacher spokesperson Carly Rodriguez provided a statement from the school via email Wednesday afternoon.

"We are devastated by the loss of a cherished member of our school community," the statement reads. "Out of respect for the family’s privacy as they grieve this unimaginable loss — and as we focus on supporting the safety and well-being of our students during this difficult time — we will not comment further."

The private boarding high school in the Ojai Valley includes grades nine to 12. In the 2022-23 academic year, about 257 students were enrolled.
