New roundabout approved

May 9—MOULTRIE — The intersection of Second Street and Tallokas Road Southeast, down the street from Joe Kem's Market, will soon be converted into a roundabout.

A contract for the work was part of a consent agenda that was moved by Councilman Daniel Dunn, seconded by Councilman Cecil Barber and passed unanimously during the city council's public session Tuesday evening.

Green's Backhoe, Inc. of Thomasville will be contracted to complete the construction, at a cost of $697,553.50,

City Manager Pete Dillard said the price is higher than expected due to other issues being resolved during the same project.

As everything will need to be dug up regardless, the city will seize the opportunity to also redo the galvanized waterline and resurface the street from Second to Main.

Currently, the waterline is roughly 80 years old and only 2 inches wide, and the water that runs through it is beginning to show slight discoloration, Dillard said.

Replacing that existing line with a new 6-inch PVC line will not only fix the issue of muddled water, but will also allow for better water pressure, he said.

Other items on the consent agenda included:

— $62,464.94 was authorized to install an odorizer replacement for Gate Station #1. This has already been budgeted for, but due to the high dollar amount needed the council's official approval.

— Electoral candidates for the Georgia Municipal Association District 10 Officers for the 2024-25 ballot were also approved during the meeting.

— Multiple budget amendments were discussed and authorized.
