The Rotary Club of Barberton was recognized Thursday on its 100th anniversary with a commendation from Summit County Councilwoman Bethany McKenney.

The club was chartered on Feb. 29, 1924.

“This club does outstanding charitable work, and the fact that they are still going strong after one hundred years is a testament to the quality of its members here in the community,” McKenney said.

The club provides more than $5,000 in scholarships each year to Barberton, Manchester and Norton students. The club also hosts a speech contest and awards $600 to winners to attend a district contest.

Rotary volunteers help on projects including stuffing Birdie Bags for the Ben Curtis Family Foundation and picking up trash on Barberton streets.

The Rotary Club of Barberton has also funded service projects like the McCafferty Park playground in Barberton, sensory room equipment at Barberton Preschool, an outdoor equipment storage shed at Barberton Preschool, a disc golf course at Tuscarawas Park, signage on the Towpath Trail and a permanent Mum Fest sponsor display sign at Lake Anna.

The Rotary Club of Barberton meets every Thursday morning at Fa-Ray's Family Restaurant, located at 1115 Wooster Road North in Barberton.
