Rosedale Beach Club in Penn Hills/Verona area ready for season

May 20—Rosedale Beach Club near the Penn Hills/Verona border will start its 95th season on Memorial Day weekend.

The pool and recreation site along Third Street opens at noon on May 29.

Club officials and volunteers recently spent a weekend cleaning the facility to prepare for the opening.

"It's gotten easier compared to scrubbing it like we used to," club president Nick Theofilis said. "With our new liner, we have been able to clean much easier. We then let it sit for a few days and make sure we're up on our chemicals."

Rosedale replaced a fiberglass liner with vinyl about three years ago.

The club serves about 250 families a season.

Theofilis said it costs about $90,000 to $110,000 a year to run the facility including payroll, utilities, water and maintenance.

Treasurer Lori Theofilis said there has been tremendous community support over the years to keep the pool running.

"It's like a family," she said. "Everybody enjoys coming back. We get people who have been members as children come back with their children and grandchildren. The love of the people who help keep it running is what keeps it together."

Nothing new is planned for this year, mostly because of the pandemic.

"Due to covid, we didn't get a chance to plan a 95th bash, but that gives us more time to fundraise and prepare for the 100th," Nick Theofilis said.

The near-Olympic-sized pool uses 335,000 gallons of water with depths ranging from 1-1/2 to 9 feet.

A slide and diving board will eventually be installed as the season progresses.

There is also a volleyball court, basketball court, dek hockey, concession stand and newly renovated bocce court.

Hours of operation are 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and noon to 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through June 14. After that, hours will be noon to 8 p.m. every day until Labor Day.

Season memberships cost $290 for individuals or $420 for a family of two or more.

Babysitter season passes are $75. They are add-ons to family memberships.

Guests passes are $5, but guests must be accompanied by a member.

People can also get bonded memberships at a $150 fee plus membership dues. They allow people to vote on future pool developments and activities.

People do not need to live in the Penn Hills or Verona area to join.

"The only requirement is payment," Nick Theofilis said. "We used to have more (membership restrictions), but we've since done way with those."

Shelby Marksberry and her family moved in the fall to Penn Hills from Jacksonville, N.C.

She and her two daughters, Mariah, 7, and Alexa, 5, stopped by the pool earlier this month to check out the site.

"It's nice," Marksberry said.

Mariah said she was excited about going swimming this year.
