Rose Bowl unveils statue of Jackie Robinson in football uniform

There’s now a statue of Jackie Robinson outside the Rose Bowl.

Wednesday, the stadium unveiled a statue of the iconic baseball player in his UCLA football uniform.

Robinson played football at UCLA after he played two seasons at Pasadena City College in 1937 and 1938. The statue, announced in June, was paid for by the Tull Family Foundation, and the ceremony was emceed by longtime Los Angeles Dodgers announcer Vin Scully.

“Jackie Robinson is a true American legend,” the family said in a statement. “and we are so honored to be able to recognize his legacy in a town and for the team that meant so much to him and the Robinson family.”

Robinson was a four-sport star in college — even playing quarterback and returning kicks while at Pasadena — before he became the first black player to play in the major leagues. After making his MLB debut in 1947, Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
