Roosevelt High School closed Friday due to 'credible threat' after 2 students shot in drive-by
DALLAS - Dallas police are searching for whoever shot two Dallas ISD students in a drive-by off campus Thursday night.
The shooting happened on Bonnie View Road around 7 p.m. as the students were apparently being driven home from football practice at Roosevelt High School in East Oak Cliff.
Late Thursday night, Dallas ISD announced it canceled classes at Roosevelt High for Friday due to what it called a credible threat.
The boys’ coach told FOX 4 he was driving them from practice when the car was shot up.
"It was not on campus, and it occurred after school where two of our students were shot," said Robyn Harris with Dallas ISD. "They were taken to a nearby hospital. We're understanding right now that they're in good condition and expected to make a full recovery."
The two sophomore students are 16 and 17 years old.
The coach said he was not injured. He drove back to campus and called 911.
A brief post from Dallas police states that the car with the coach and players was traveling southbound on Bonnie View when another vehicle pulled up to the passenger side of the car and fired several shots Thursday night.
In a tweet just before midnight, Dallas ISD said Roosevelt High School classes would be canceled on Friday as a precaution.
"We ask all students & staff to refrain from coming to campus & more information will be provided when an update is available. Thank you for your cooperation & understanding," the district said on social media.
"We're not going to go into specifics on what the threat was itself, but I will say there likely is some connection," Harris said. "But we won't go into detail regarding what the threat itself was."
The shooting investigation is being handled by Dallas police because the incident occurred off campus.
Investigators do not have a vehicle or suspect description.
Harris said parents and students should expect a visible difference on campus Monday.
"That could look like additional police presence. It could look like a different entry process for arrivals and those who are entering into the campus," she said. "Those processes may look a little bit different from times past, and it could also entail including our mental health clinicians."
A motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
