Roommate kills man with metal pipe after Pop-Tart theft, investigators say

OZARK, Ala (WDHN) — An Ozark man is being held without bond on a manslaughter charge after investigators claimed he hit his roommate with a pipe after an argument.

On Thursday, April 4, Ozark EMS rushed 63-year-old Billy Joe Maynard from his home in the 100 block of Walton Street to Dale Medical Center with injuries including three broken ribs and a ruptured spleen.

According to Ozark Police Deputy Micheal Bryan, while at the hospital, Maynard told investigators he was hit with a metal pipe by his roommate, 59-year-old Daryl Miley, a few days before his hospitalization.

Maynard died from his injuries on Thursday, April 4, hours after being admitted to the hospital.

Deputy Chief Bryan says Miley confessed during an interview with investigators, saying he hit Maynard in the stomach with the pipe after “a heated argument about an alleged pop tart theft.”

Miley was arrested and charged with one count of manslaughter. He is currently being held in the Dale County Jail without a bond.
