Romania arrests alleged Russian spy for monitoring NATO sites

An alleged Russian spy has been arrested in Romania for photographing NATO military facilities and passing the information to Russia through the country's embassy, Romanian news outlet Digi24 reported on May 24.

The suspect had been monitoring Romanian and NATO military sites near Tulcea since 2022, gathering military intelligence and taking photos of equipment and personnel movements along the border with Ukraine.

The Romanian Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) searched the suspect's home and seized several pieces of evidence.

At the request of DIICOT, the Bucharest Court of Appeals issued a 30-day preventive detention order for the defendant, who is charged with high treason.
