Roland Martin Agrees To Sit With Wendy Williams Following Her HBCU & NAACP Controversy

Wendy Williams and Roland Martin are set to have a real discussion on race.

Wendy Williams is feeling the backlash after she offered her controversial opinion on the significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

“I would be really offended if there was a school that was known as a historically white college. We have historically black colleges. What if there was the National Organization for White People, only? There’s the NAACP,” Williams said when commenting on Jesse Williams’ BET Awards speech last week.

The television host’s remarks, which are usually met with laughter or applause, elicited awkward silence from her studio audience. Black Twitter on the other hand, fired back immediately to defend both institutions. News One host Roland Martin also joined in on the major clapback.

“I really am tired of these wannabe Stacy Dashes who clearly don’t bother to actually read a book,” he began before proceeding to give the media personality a lesson in Black History 101.

Martin shifted his focus to HBCUs after informing Williams that white people have been active members of the NAACP since its inception (the first NAACP president was a white man). “One of the reasons you don’t have historically white universities is because we just simply call them universities.”

Martin also added that HBCUs, like the NAACP, are not discriminatory institutions as they continue to admit non black students into their programs. “When you’re on TV, and you have no idea what you’re talking about, shut the hell up,” the award-winning journalist asserted.

In light of the criticism and heightened racial relations of today, Wendy Williams has made an effort to invite Martin to The Wendy Williams Show to continue the discussion on race. He will join her face to face Thursday (July 14). “He’s educated me quite a bit and I hope you can do the same for all of us and we can begin to heal and stop,” she said.
