Roger Goodell issues statement on Michael Bennett

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement on Wednesday evening about Michael Bennett and an incident where he was forced to the ground by Las Vegas police, saying he supported the Seattle Seahawks star defensive end.

In the statement Goodell said, “the issues Michael has been raising deserve serious attention from all our leaders in every community.”

Bennett said he was was singled out unfairly by police, forced to the sidewalk and had guns drawn on him after attending a Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas. TMZ later posted a video of the incident. Bennett spoke about the incident during a press conference Wednesday and had to end it when he became overcome with emotion.

Here is Goodell’s statement, via NFL spokeman Brian McCarthy:

Bennett has been one of the players to sit for the national anthem. He addressed that when talking about the incident with police in Las Vegas, saying, “People ask why I sit down. This is why.”

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith also put out a statement regarding Bennett on Wednesday.
