Rocky Ford 3-year-old died from accidental drowning

(ROCKY FORD, Colo.) — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced on Thursday, May 23 that preliminary reports show a 3-year-old Rocky Ford boy died from accidental drowning.

Amari Galan, 3, was reported missing on Saturday, May 18, after he wandered away from his home in the 900 block of Washington Street in Rocky Ford. An Endangered Missing Alert was issued by the CBI, which stated Galan was last seen at 4 a.m. only wearing a diaper. Galan was reported to have special needs.

His body was found in an irrigation canal on Sunday, May 19.

Investigators conducted a search focusing on the Caitlin canal that runs directly behind the boy’s home. Search and Rescue personnel searched banks of the canal by foot, and the boy’s body was found several miles downstream in the canal around 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The Otero County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy on Tuesday, May 21, and preliminary results were consistent with an accidental drowning, the CBI said.

The CBI said the investigation is ongoing and the final report will be submitted to the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
