Rockies celebrate wild-card clinch by jumping in Coors Field fountain

Before the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks meet in the National League wild-card on Wednesday, it’s up to us to determine which team celebrated their clinch better.

The impromptu game of can you top this started last Sunday, after the Diamondbacks clinched their spot. On that day, the party quickly moved to the Chase Field pool. Not exactly original. A few clinching teams have gone there before. In fact, the visiting Dodgers once did it while in Arizona, which caused quite a stir. But hey, a pool is never not fun.

Aside from that, the Diamondbacks didn’t even know they were in a competition. The Rockies sprung that on them out of left field.

So what was the Rockies counter to that? How about a walk through and even a dip in the Coors Field fountains.

That would have been a lot cooler in the daylight. Nonetheless, it’s a refreshing and well-earned celebration for a team that hasn’t had a darn thing to celebrate since its last trip to the postseason in 2009.

There were some lean years in between. Five straight fourth or fifth place finishes to be exact. Players like Carlos Gonzalez, Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon suffered though most of it, so it’s especially nice to see them cutting loose.

For that reason, and also because I’m slightly biased, I’ll give the Rockies the nod.

The Rockies learned of their clinch before losing to the Dodgers Saturday night. They can send a big thank you to the St. Louis Cardinals for rallying from a six-run deficit to beat the Brewers. Otherwise the drama would have carried over into Sunday.

They looked and sounded appreciative, didn’t they?

The early clinch gave the team plenty of time to celebrate before the game, and plan their celebration for after. They definitely made the most of it.
